Are you a patient and engaging SEND Teaching Assistant who can bring out the best in a young person?

We are looking for a SEND Teaching Assistant to provide dedicated 1:1 support to a young boy within KS1 at a mainstream primary school.

He is non-verbal but a real character, with his own personality, interests and ways of communicating. We are looking for someone who will take the time to get to know him, understand his communication and build a positive, trusting relationship.

The right person will be able to provide structure and consistency throughout the school day, helping him to remain engaged, stay on track and access learning in a way that works for him.

The Role

As his SEND Teaching Assistant, you will:

• Provide consistent 1:1 support throughout the school morning.
• Support him to engage with classroom activities and access the curriculum.
• Help him remain focused and gently redirect him when he becomes distracted.
• Use appropriate visual, practical and communication strategies to support his understanding.
• Recognise and respond to his non-verbal communication, behaviours and cues.
• Support with emotional and behavioural regulation when required.
• Encourage independence, confidence and participation within the classroom.
• Work closely with the class teacher, SENCO and wider school team.
• Maintain clear boundaries while providing patient, nurturing and consistent support.
• Help create an environment where he feels safe, understood and included.

Who Are We Looking For?

We would love to hear from candidates who:

• Have previous experience supporting children or young people with SEND.
• Ideally hold a Teaching Assistant/SEND Teaching Assistant qualification.
• Have experience supporting non-verbal or minimally verbal children.
• Are calm, patient, nurturing and able to build strong relationships.
• Are confident supporting children who may require additional help with regulation, engagement and behaviour.
• Ideally have current Positive Handling, Team Teach, PRICE, MAPA or other recognised physical intervention/restraint training.
• Understand that behaviour is a form of communication and can respond calmly and appropriately.
• Are reliable and able to provide the consistency that is particularly important for children with SEND.
• Hold, or are willing to obtain, an enhanced DBS and complete the relevant safeguarding checks.

The Person

More than anything, we are looking for someone who genuinely enjoys working with children with additional needs.

You will need to be someone who can celebrate the small wins, bring patience on more challenging days and recognise the personality behind the communication needs.
