Applicants must have:
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) – essential.
- Proven teaching experience with secondary-aged pupils.
- Significant experience supporting children and young people with complex Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC).
- Strong experience and understanding of sensory processing and sensory learning needs.
- Experience adapting teaching and learning for pupils with complex SEND.
- Experience delivering 1:1 or highly individualised education.
- A good understanding of EHCPs and working towards individual EHCP outcomes.
- The ability to recognise signs of sensory and emotional dysregulation and adapt teaching accordingly.
- A calm, patient, flexible and relationship-led approach.
- A strong understanding of safeguarding and professional boundaries.
Please note: This is a specialist role. Applicants without QTS and relevant experience of complex ASC and sensory needs will not be suitable for this particular provision.
The Role
As the Specialist SEND Tutor, you will provide bespoke 1:1 tuition tailored to the young person’s EHCP, SEND profile, current academic level and individual needs.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Planning and delivering engaging, age-appropriate learning for a secondary-aged pupil.
- Providing structured and individualised teaching based on the pupil’s current academic ability and EHCP outcomes.
- Using autism-informed and sensory-informed teaching approaches.
- Adapting the learning environment, resources, activities and pace to accommodate sensory processing needs.
- Understanding how complex ASC and sensory differences can affect communication, emotional regulation, behaviour and readiness to learn.
- Using calm, consistent and low-arousal approaches where appropriate.
- Identifying potential triggers and early signs of dysregulation and adapting sessions accordingly.
- Developing a positive and trusting relationship with the young person.
- Supporting academic progress alongside confidence, communication, independence and engagement with education.
- Establishing predictable routines and providing a safe and consistent learning environment.
- Monitoring and recording progress.
- Providing appropriate reports and feedback.
- Working collaboratively with parents/carers, the local authority and other professionals involved in the pupil’s education and care.
- Supporting progress towards the outcomes identified within the pupil’s EHCP.
You will be an experienced qualified teacher who understands that education for a young person with complex ASC and sensory needs may need to look very different from a traditional classroom model.
You will be confident in adapting your teaching style and expectations while ensuring that learning remains meaningful, age-respectful and appropriate for a secondary-aged young person.
Most importantly, you will be able to establish trust, recognise the young person’s individual communication and sensory needs, and create learning opportunities that enable them to engage and make progress at an appropriate pace.

The successful applicant will be subject to appropriate safer recruitment checks, including an Enhanced DBS check, references, identity and right-to-work checks, and verification of QTS, qualifications and employment history.
