Job description:
We are currently recruiting for a committed and compassionate SEND Teaching Assistant to join a specialist SEND school. This is a highly rewarding role supporting children and young people with a range of complex needs, helping them to access education in a safe, structured, and nurturing environment.
The Role:
As a SEND Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with teachers and support staff to provide tailored support to learners with a variety of needs, including ASD, ADHD, PMLD, MLD. You may be supporting students on a 1:1 basis or within small groups, adapting your approach to meet individual needs and abilities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support learners with complex SEND needs across the school day
- Assist with the delivery of personalised learning activities
- Promote communication using tools such as Makaton, PECS, visual timetables, and sensory approaches
- Provide personal care where required, maintaining dignity and respect
- Support learners with sensory regulation through structured sensory sessions
- Manage and de-escalate challenging behaviour using a calm and consistent approach
- Build strong, trusting relationships with learners to support engagement and progress
- Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, and other professionals
- Ensure the safety and wellbeing of all learners at all times
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
- Experience working with children or young people with SEND, ideally within a specialist setting
- Knowledge of conditions such as ASD, ADHD, PMLD, SEMH, or similar
- A calm, patient, and resilient approach to supporting challenging behaviour
- Experience with communication strategies such as Makaton, PECS, or visual supports
- Willingness to provide personal care and support with physical needs
- A genuine passion for supporting learners with additional needs
- Relevant qualifications or training (desirable but not essential)
