At The Specialist SEND Group, we know that meaningful change for young people with complex needs often begins with one simple but powerful step building trust.
Recently, one of our specialist SEND tutors attended an initial meet and greet session with a student who had been finding it extremely difficult to engage in school. The purpose of the visit was simply to introduce the tutor, begin developing a positive relationship, and understand the student’s needs and preferences.
What happened next demonstrated the impact that the right approach and the right person can have!
Following the session, school staff reported a remarkable shift in the student’s engagement. They were able to follow instructions, spent time learning in the classroom environment, and even chose to eat in the dining hall for the first time. Staff described the change as unexpected and incredibly encouraging.
This moment highlights the importance of a relationship driven model when supporting students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. Many young people experiencing school avoidance or emotional barriers to learning need time, patience, and consistency before they feel safe enough to re-engage.
Our tutors are highly experienced in recognising these needs and use personalised strategies such as structured routines, visual supports, and short, manageable learning activities to build confidence and reduce anxiety.
While this was just the first step in the student’s journey, it reinforced how powerful early connection and understanding can be in supporting successful reintegration into education.
At The Specialist SEND Group, we are proud to work in partnership with schools and local authorities to provide specialist tutoring that helps young people reconnect with learning and move forward positively.
