What is EOTAS?
Education Otherwise Than At School (EOTAS) is a way of providing education for children and young people who are unable to access suitable education in a traditional school setting. Instead of expecting a learner to fit into a standard educational environment, EOTAS provision can be designed around their individual needs, circumstances and barriers to learning. Provision may include specialist 1:1 tuition, home or community-based education, online learning, or a combination of approaches. EOTAS is designed to ensure that being unable to access a traditional school setting does not mean a young person has to miss out on their education.
Who EOTAS packages support
EOTAS packages can support children and young people whose individual needs mean that traditional education is currently difficult to access. This may include learners experiencing anxiety, EBSA or school non-attendance, as well as children and young people with autism, ADHD, SEMH, PMLD or other complex SEND needs. Every learner is different, which is why the right provision needs to consider more than academic ability alone. Engagement, communication, emotional wellbeing, interests, learning preferences and individual circumstances can all play an important part in creating education that a young person can access and benefit from.
Why bespoke provision is needed
For some young people, a traditional classroom environment simply isn’t the right fit at a particular point in their education. A standard approach can create additional barriers when a learner needs greater flexibility, a different environment or more individualised support. Bespoke EOTAS provision allows education to be shaped around the learner rather than expecting the learner to adapt to a fixed model. This could mean changing where learning takes place, adapting the pace and structure of sessions, using a young person’s interests to build engagement or providing consistent 1:1 support from a specialist educator. The aim is to create meaningful opportunities for learning while recognising the individual needs of the young person.
