Make a Difference. Teach with Purpose.

Are you passionate about transforming the lives of young people who have faced barriers in mainstream education? Are you a nurturing, innovative, and creative individual who believes education should be accessible to all? We’re looking for a dedicated Functional Skills Tutor to join a forward-thinking and supportive alternative education team in Rotherham. This is a rewarding opportunity to be part of a high-impact alternative provision where every learner is valued, and every small win matters.

What’s in it for you?

  • 11 weeks of paid holiday per year (aligned with school holidays)

  • Vitality Health package – access to private healthcare with no excess to pay

  • Royal London Pension Scheme

  • Mileage reimbursement at 45p per mile for work-related travel

  • Smaller teaching groups – more time to connect with learners

  • Dedicated non-contact time for planning, creativity, and innovation

  • A warm, people-first environment that values staff wellbeing and development

Who You’ll Be Working With

All of our learners all have Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) and have typically found mainstream education challenging. You’ll be working with young people aged 16–25, many of whom have additional needs such as SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health), Autism (ASC), or ADHD. Your support could be the turning point in their educational journey.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver high-quality Functional Skills Maths and English lessons (Pre-Entry to Level 2)

  • Create engaging, inclusive, and creative learning materials tailored to individual needs

  • Provide differentiated support for learners with diverse backgrounds and abilities

  • Work collaboratively with the SENCO to implement and review Individual Education Plans (IEPs)

  • Provide regular, meaningful feedback to students through verbal and written marking

  • Foster strong, positive relationships through youth work-style engagement and extracurricular activities (e.g. nature walks, creative workshops, group sessions)

  • Contribute to a nurturing environment where young people feel safe, supported, and motivated

  • Champion inclusive practice and help uphold the ethos of an alternative education setting

  • Uphold high standards of safeguarding and behaviour, working in line with Ofsted criteria for Outstanding and Good provision

Please Note

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of our learners and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. All appointments will be subject to an Enhanced DBS check, professional references, and a completed Self-Disclosure.
