Full Job Description

SEND Teaching Assistant (PMLD) – 1:1 Support
Southend-on-Sea, SS0 0RS

Are you someone with patience, warmth, and a genuine passion for helping young people with complex needs to thrive? This is a unique and rewarding opportunity to work closely with one incredible young person, supporting them on their journey of learning, growth, and joy.

We are seeking a Specialist SEND Teaching Assistant to join a small, dedicated team in a home-based 1:1 setting, working alongside a Specialist SEND Teacher and a network of therapists. This isn’t just about education – it’s about creating a safe, calm, and inspiring atmosphere where the young person can feel secure, valued, and happy.

About the Young Person

  • 14 years old with complex PMLD needs

  • Visually and hearing impaired

  • Non-verbal, communicates using PECS and Makaton

  • Tube-fed with additional health considerations (staff wear masks or face shields for safety)

  • A confident mover indoors; uses a wheelchair outside to prevent sensory overload

  • Loves music, movement, and dancing – a joyful and clever spirit

  • Splits her time between structured learning and sensory/outdoor experiences

Your Role

  • Work 25 hours per week, Monday to Friday (09:00 – 14:00) term time only

  • Provide 1:1 support during learning, sensory exploration, and outdoor activities

  • Assist with communication, mobility, and everyday routines

  • Create a calm, safe, and engaging environment

  • Support the Specialist Teacher and multi-disciplinary team (OT, Physio, SaLT, Music Therapist, Nurse)

  • Celebrate every achievement, no matter how small, with encouragement and positivity

About You

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Has experience (or a strong interest) in working with young people with PMLD, sensory needs, or communication difficulties

  • Understands the importance of patience, flexibility, and creativity in SEND support

  • Is comfortable using (or willing to learn) PECS and Makaton

  • Brings genuine kindness, empathy, and a “can-do” attitude

  • Is a great team player but also confident working independently

  • Values the small moments of joy that make a big difference

Why This Role?

This is not your typical classroom role. It’s a chance to slow down, connect deeply, and make every day count for a young person who deserves the very best. You’ll be part of a supportive team who share the same goal: to create an environment where education, wellbeing, and happiness come together.

Start Date: September 2025 (with flexibility if needed)
Location: Southend-on-Sea, SS0 0RS

If you are someone who believes in the power of patience, creativity, and heart-led support, we’d love to hear from you.
